Report: Race 1 Quotes, Brno 2008

Quotes

Diego Alessi – No.17 Brixia Racing Aston Martin DBRS9, 1st: “There was some chaos on the opening lap – but it was all behind me! I made a good start and got the lead in the first corner, and I was enjoying a good battle with the No.8 Aston Martin. I thought he had overtaken me under yellow flags, so I was expecting him to get a penalty – he did, but that was for a pit-stop problem! The Brixia car is very consistent and easy to drive – it’s improved a lot since last season, which made my job easy.”

Marcello Zani – No.17 Brixia Racing Aston Martin DBRS9, 1st: “When I took the car over, there were no other cars near me, so I was just having to watch my lap times on the dashboard and push as hard as possible. I kept pushing right to the end of the race, because you never know what can happen. I’m both driver and team manager, so this is doubly satisfying for me. I’m grateful to all the guys in the team who put in all the hard work. We will see what happens tomorrow – the car is fast in race set-up, so I’m quite confident, but with 40 cars on the grid, anything can happen in the first corner.”

Jean-Claude Lagniez – No.10 Hexis Racing Aston Martin DBRS9, 2nd: “It was very difficult at the start – I lost ten places at the first corner, so I was down in 23rd at the end of the lap, so I thought all hope was gone. But then the safety car closed the field up, and Fred drove incredibly fast during his stint, so I have to say thanks to him. For tomorrow we start in fourth position, which is better than today, when we started eighteenth!”

Frédéric Makowiecki – No.10 Hexis Racing Aston Martin DBRS9, 2nd: “Jean-Claude gave me the car in fifteenth place, and the Aston Martin is really good on this circuit, so we could get a good result. It’s important for the whole team, because the start of the season was difficult for us, so I’m very happy. The Aston Martin has a good chassis, and good grip, which are both important on this circuit – that’s why it’s so quick at Brno, and I’m hoping it will be quick for the rest of the Championship.”

Martin Matzke – No.38 MM-Racing Corvette Z.06R GT3, 3rd: “In the first corner, when the accident happened, I picked up a lot of places, which was key to our race. Jiri drove really well in his stint, but Fred Makowiecki was too fast for us; but I’m still very happy to finish third, and I’m hoping for another podium tomorrow.”

Jiri Skula – No.38 MM-Racing Corvette Z.06R GT3, 3rd: “Finishing on the podium at home is great, especially after we had problems in the German series. This is a new car, which is much better than the old one, and we’re still learning.”

David Ashburn – No.6 Trackspeed Porsche 997 GT3 Cup S, 8th: “This result shows what happens when you have the good driver in the car first – I made up 14 places on the first lap, then handed it over to Richard in a great position! Seriously, I just did all that I could to stay out of trouble on the first lap, and it worked really well, but it’s Richard who did most of the hard work.”

Richard Williams – No.6 Trackspeed Porsche 997 GT3 Cup S, 8th: “I’m pleased that we had such a good finish; we just kept out of trouble, when it seemed that a lot of other cars kept finding trouble! It’s a good result; given our pace, there was nothing we could do about the cars in front of us.”

Thomas Mutsch – No.20 Matech GT Racing Ford GT, 10th: “That was a hard race for us; we had some oversteer, and we lost some time at the driver change-over. I thought that the safety car would be good for us, because it closed the field up, but then the car didn’t seem to be right; we’ll have to check the car over and try to sort it out for tomorrow’s race.”

Michael Greenhalgh – No.25 Team Berlanga Ascari KZ1R GT3, 12th: “We sorted out the issues we had from qualifying, which moved us much nearer the front. Unfortunately we lost five or six seconds on our pit-stop, which dropped us to eighth; Jonathan [Lang] got us up to sixth, but then he was punted off at the final corner, which cost us a few places. The good news for us is that we’ve sorted out the car, and now we’ve got good pace.”

Jose Manuel Balbiani – No.5 Kessel Racing Ferrari F430 GT, 13th: “Our race was pretty difficult – although we started from pole, Claudio spun at the first corner; it was his first race in the car. Then it was just a case of doing our best; the car wasn’t great because the spin had damaged a tyre, but at least we were the first Ferrari to finish, which is good for the Manufacturers’ Cup, so we have to hope for better in tomorrow’s race.”

Dominik Kraihamer – No.14 S-Berg Racing Lamborghini Gallardo GT3, 15th: “That was a really tough race, because it was very hot in the car – but I had a lot of fun. That’s important, because when you’re having fun you get faster! We had some problems yesterday, so I only got three laps in, so I was still finding things out about the track and the car today. It wasn’t easy, but we are moving closer to the leading guys, which is what matters.”

Luca Polato - No.14 S-Berg Racing Lamborghini Gallardo GT3, 15th: “I did the first stint, and it was very difficult because of the problems we had yesterday. Today was a good race, because I avoided the crash on the first lap. Then Dominik drove a great second stint, and we got a good result.”

Phil Quaife – No.33 APEX Motorsport Jaguar XKR, 17th: “I’m very disappointed after that; we got a good start at the start and I was holding my own in the first corner. But then I got hit when another car lost control on my inside; I held it, but then an Ascari spun in front of me and I had nowhere to go. So I couldn’t avoid hitting it, and went into a spin – after that, we just had to do our best with a damaged car. The Jaguar has a lot of straight-line speed and the engine is fantastic; we’re working on the chassis, and hopefully we’ll be able to look at some good results by the end of the season.”
